Emotion detection

Every recording is analyzed for emotion, one to a few emotions per entry, with intensity, a subject, and a rich set of internal coordinates that power the mood charts in Insights.

Where it shows up

  • Entry card: the primary emotion as a chip, often with its subject ("Anxious about the deadline").
  • Entry detail screen: full breakdown including intensity.
  • Insights → Patterns → Your emotional flow: a chart of how emotions shift through the selected window.
  • Insights → Patterns → What you've been feeling: frequency breakdown of emotions you've logged.
  • Pattern Sky: emotion valence is a filter for the whole sky.

What gets extracted

Per emotion:

  • Label: one of 42 (e.g. anxious, calm, excited, content, frustrated).
  • Intensity: 1 (low), 2 (moderate), 3 (high).
  • Subject: who or what the emotion is about. Multi-subject is supported ("Anxious about deadline, meeting, and email" → three subjects; the UI shows "Anxious about deadline, meeting, and one more").
  • Valence, Arousal, Dominance (VAD): internal numeric coordinates used for charts. You don't see these directly, but they drive the color system and the emotional flow view.
  • Color and band: visualization color matched to each emotion's band (e.g. "positive-high", "neutral-moderate").

Grouping by valence

In search and Pattern Sky filters, emotions are grouped into three buckets so you don't have to pick from all 42:

  • Positive: 11 emotions (e.g. happy, content, excited, grateful).
  • Neutral: 12 emotions (e.g. focused, calm, curious).
  • Negative: 19 emotions (e.g. anxious, frustrated, sad, overwhelmed).

Tap a group to include all its emotions, or drill in to pick individually.

Good to know

  • Accessibility-friendly. Each emotion has a shape as well as a color, so colorblind users can read the charts.
  • Subjects are merged intelligently. Up to two are listed fully; more get abbreviated as "and N more".
  • You can turn emotion detection off from the admin/developer settings if you're a sensitive use case, but moods and Pattern Sky become less interesting without it.
  • Editing an entry does not re-run emotion detection. Even though the transcript itself is editable, emotion analysis only runs when a new recording is processed. If the emotion feels wrong, record a fresh note.

Plan & limits

No plan gating. Emotion detection runs on every plan.
