Account and data

Account and sign-in

How identity works in tellmint. You can start as a guest, attach a real account when you're ready, and sign in to the same account on a new phone later.

Two ways to sign in

  • Google: one tap, no password. Uses your Google account from the device.
  • Email link: enter your email, we send a magic link, you tap it to sign in. No password to remember.

Both work for new accounts and returning users.

Guest (anonymous) identity

When you use the app without signing in:

  • You have a cloud identity, tellmint stores your entries safely.
  • You can record, edit, search, and use every free feature.
  • You cannot buy Pro or Max, and you cannot restore purchases.
  • If you uninstall or switch phones without signing in, the guest account is gone.

Attach an account to a guest session

From the Profile sheet (when anonymous) tap Link Account and choose Google or email. You can also go to Settings -> About -> Account status and choose Sign in with Google or Sign in with email. Your existing entries carry over, the data moves with you.

If the Google or email account already has an old tellmint journal, the app merges your guest journal into that account. It waits until recordings and recent edits are safely synced first, then signs in and brings the guest entries, memories, and search data with you.

If you see a message that recordings are still waiting to sync, stay on the guest account for a moment until they appear in the feed, then try linking again. If one recording could not sync, retry it or remove it before signing in so it is not left behind on the device.

Sign out

  • Profile sheet → Sign out (at the bottom).
  • You'll be asked to confirm, because signing out from a guest account is permanent.
  • Signed-in users can sign back in to the same account and pick up where they left off.

Magic links are one-tap when you open the email on the same phone you asked from, tellmint already knows which email was used and signs you straight in.

If you open the link on a different phone (or after clearing the app's data), tellmint has no saved email to compare against. It will ask you to type your email once to confirm it's the same address the link was sent to, then complete sign-in. This is a deliberate security check, if someone forwards your magic link, they still can't sign in without knowing your email.

Good to know

  • RevenueCat identity syncs with your auth state. Guests stay anonymous to RevenueCat; signed-in users are logged in with their Firebase UID. That's how restore works across devices.
  • Deleting your account signs you out and wipes your data. See Delete your account.
  • Sign-in does not change your data visibility to anyone else. Tellmint never exposes your entries to other users, sign-in is only about portability.
  • There is no password form. If you tried to create one, use the Google or magic-link route instead.
